Seventeen teams waited eagerly beside their empty crates to rummage through the treasures of Friedland Industries recycling facility on Saturday as the annual Scrapfest competition kicked off with the sound of a horn. The scrap metal of Friedland Industries is a valuable commodity that is traded in open markets worldwide, or otherwise melted into something new, including these amazing sculptures. Two of TR’s own stood by excitedly as team members carefully, but quickly collected the scrap that will soon be recycled into pieces of art and unveiled to the public in two weeks.
Scrapfest is a sculpture competition in Old Town Lansing. The sculptures are built entirely out of scrap materials from the Friedland Industries recycling facility. Teams had an hour to collect up to 500 pounds of scrap for their masterpieces. The completed sculptures will be put on display at this year’s Festival of the Moon held Friday, June 22. They will then be judged and auctioned off at the Festival of the Sun the following day on Saturday, June 23. Proceeds will go to the Old Town Commercial Association to further the community and economic development of Lansing’s Old Town.
