I’ll admit, I am obsessed with the weather. The first thing that I do every morning is check the weather on my phone, on multiple apps. I love “Local on the 8’s” on the Weather Channel, and was glued to the news when Hurricane Irene was approaching the U.S. I’m even secretly excited to meet my friend’s boyfriend next week, and it’s because he’s a local meteorologist.
A while back I remember hearing someone say, “You know a conversation is going bad, if you start talking about the weather”. I have always kept that thought in the back of my mind. Yes, this is probably true if you are on a date, in a job interview or on a sales call. But, to me, the weather is a universal topic that everyone can talk about. The weather isn’t controversial, everyone has to deal with it and everyone seems to have a favorite season.
I started paying attention to how often weather comes up in conversations. It happens every day, most frequently in elevators or when you are waiting in line. You hear the same comments all the time, “I’m so tired of this rain”….”but we needed it”. “This heat and humidity is unbearable”…”I’m not complaining when I think about winter”. I think you can tell a lot about a person’s attitude simply by their comments on the weather. It’s just small talk, you don’t really have to think about what you are saying, but what do your comments really say about you? Do you look at the forecast with your glass half full, or half empty?
