WOOD TV: River rapids could draw $20m to GR

Excerpted from WOOD-TV on September 8, 2014:

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A new study says restoring the rapids to the Grand River could have an economic impact of up to nearly $20 million each year in Grand Rapids.

The study released Monday was commissioned by Grand Rapids Whitewater, the group pushing to turn the river to its original state. It says rapids could mean between between $15.9 million and $19.1 million in economic impact each year for the city.

The plan would remove five dams between Sixth and Pearl streets, then dump 200,000 tons of rocks and boulders in the river, recreating the rapids that gave the city its name.
